Carney's Hair Restorer
Edward Carney, of Terre Haute, Indiana, registered a Patent for a Hair Restorer in 1889 (Patent #416,439). The preparation was composed of 1 pint of soft water, 1 ounce of glycerine, 3/4 ounce of plumbic (lead) acetate, 1/2 ounce of hyposulphate of soda, 1/2 ounce of tincture of cantharides, and 1/8 ounce of extract of white rose. The ingredients were mixed, and allowed to sit for one day. Carney claimed his preparation would cure dandruff, and prevent the hair from falling off.
