Orlando J. Wood was an M.D. in St Louis starting in 1854. His office was at 124 Market. During 1857-8, he was listed as Orlando J. Wood & Co., Hair Restorative & Patent Medicines, with a Depot at 114 Market. The same year, he was also had a Depot in New York City at 312 Broadway. The St Louis directory said in 1860 that he had moved to New York. In fact, he was listed in New York in 1860 as "Restorative," at 444 Broadway. According to the Wilsons, Wood had hired Jonathan Kimball earlier to manage the New York Branch.

The true quart size bottle is very unusual and extremely rare; a "great" hair preparation bottle. My favorite is still the deep aqua, iron pontil ones like the #2 below, which is in my personal collection. The photo of the #3 is from Ed Gray (Great Antique Bottles).

The 1870 Detroit Review of Medicine and Pharmacy examined this preparation and found it to contain 3.08 grains of lead per fluid ounce.
