Walnutta
Howard E. Nichols, of St Louis, registered this brand name with the picture shown as a trademark in 1906. He claimed to have been using the symbols since 1901. Nichols registered another trademark in 1912 for the word "VValnetta" (TM # 85,607). This was apparently the spelling he used for Italian and German advertisements (see pamphlet). In 1912, Nichols was in business at 303 N. 14th Street, in St Louis. The following is a transcription of an ad from the 1922 Montgomery Ward's Catalog:
WALNUTTA - THE HAIR STAIN
A stain which is always the same strength. Colors the hair dark, medium, or light brown. Shipping weight per bottle, 10 ounces. Price per 2 ounce bottle, $.65.
Walnutta Hair Stain was examined in 1921, and the results were reported in Nostrums & Quackery. They said it appeared to be primarily pyrogallol, a compound of copper, with a small amount of iron.
