In the 1840 Boston Directory, there was an ad from New York, indicating that Thomas M. May was then selling Turkish Hair Dye. He was a Ladies & Gentlemens Wigmaker and Perfumer, with a business address of 98 Chatham Street. I found the Turkish Hair Dye for sale in the 1885 McKesson & Robbins catalog, and the 1896 Morrison & Plummer catalog.
