Philipp Trautwein, of Brooklyn, New York, registered a Patent for his Hair Restorative in 1872 (Patent #126,591). The preparation was about 86% decoction of gall-nuts, and 14% dissolved sugar of lead. Trautwein claimed that his invention was good for all cases of baldness, but particularly in cases where the baldness had been caused by diseases such as nervous headache, or fever and ague.
