Tilton's Hair Dressing
Jeremiah C. Tilton, of Sanbornton Bridge New Hampshire registered a patent for "IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR DRESSING THE HAIR" in 1868 (Patent #82,660). His compound was made as follows:
To make the accompanying roll of two ounces I grind or mix thoroughly, in a mill or mortar, two drachms of lac or precipitate of sulphur, one drachm superacetate of lead, (sugar of lead,), six drachms glycerine, and one-half drachm of borax. Into a suitable vessel I then put three and one-half drachms of spermaceti, and three drachms of Barbary tallow, (or wax,) and bring the whole to a melted state over a fire. To this I then add the mixture of the ingredients above named, and when the two are thoroughly intermixed, I add whatever may be used to give the desired perfume, and pour it into a mould to cool.
