Philipp Schlicher, of Louisville, Kentucky, registered a Patent for an "Improvement in Medical Compounds for the Hair" in 1871 (Patent #119,052). The compound was intended to cause hair to grow on the human head where it has fallen off prematurely or otherwise. It was made of 1 ounce of birch tree juice, and 1/10th of an ounce of oil of rosemary.
