John Moye's Hair Restorative
John Moye, of Medina, New York, registered a Patent for his "Hair Restorative" in 1863 (Patent #39,304). The following is an excerpt from the letters of patent:
One pint of castor-oil, five pints of alcohol, one pint of tincture of lobelia, one pint of tincture of blood-root, two ounces of laudanium, one-half ounce of citronella, one-fourth ounce of bergamot, fifteen drops of oil of cloves, and fifteen drops of cinnamon.

A compound made from the above ingredients in the proportions stated is found to be an excellent wash for the hair, as it removes all dandruff from the cuticle and gives the hair a soft and silky appearance. Besides, also, being a preservative of the hair, it stimulates a healthy action, promotes its growth, and prevents its falling out. The above compound also possesses medicinal qualities which render it equally valuable in allaying inflammation
