Augustus F. Duprey, of Napa, Calif., registered the word "Mertol," as a trademark in 1900 (TM #31,875). The trademark was for a "Preparation for Treating the Hair & Scalp." Duprey indicated that he had started using the brand name in 1899. This bottle was listed for sale in the March 1988 issue of the Antique Bottle & Glass Collector Magazine, by Shane Spano.
