Allen C. Maxfield, of Biddeford, Maine, Patented the formula for his Hair Restorative in 1870 (Patent #110,058). The formula consisted of 24 ounces of water, 4 ounces of glycerine, 2 ounces of tincture of cantharides (Spanish fly), and 2 ounces of aromatic spirits of ammonia.
