Joseph S. Letord, of Sedalia, Missouri, registered a Patent for "Improvement in Compounds For Dyeing Hair" in 1871 (Patent #116,462). The preparation was composed of 1 ounce of concentrated aqua ammonia, 1 dram of crystalized silver nitrate, and 1/2 dram of deodorized glycerine.
