Leip's Hair Tonic
George A. Leip, of Leadville Colorado, registered a Patent for his Hair Tonic in 1883 (Patent #285,045). He claimed it was for "the preservation, growth, and renewal of human hair." The preparation was made by first steeping 1 pound of onions, 1/2 pound of (unpeeled) potatoes, and 3/4 of a pound of sage in 1 gallon of water for about 1 hour. It was then strained through canvas or some other suitable material. Finally, a perfume was normally added to disguise the onions. The instructions for using the compound required rubbing it into the scalp three times a day for at least 2 months.
