Grandjean's Patent Preparation
Auguste Grandjean was first listed in New York City in 1832 as a "Hairdresser" at 2 Park Place. By 1833, he had moved to 445 Broadway. Starting around 1837, he starting advertising himself as the "Author of an invaluable composition for the cure of dandruff and restoration of the hair." He registered a Patent for his composition on the 28th of February, 1844 (Patent #3453). His business location at that time was No. 1 Astor House, Barclay Street. He was at the same address until 1869, but his listed occupation changed almost every year. Various listings included: "Physician," "Perfumer," "Hairbraids," and "Dye." His last listing was in 1871. At that time he was listed as "Dye" at 7 Astor Place.

The composition that Grandjean patented in 1844 was called "Grandjean's American Brick." The it was described in as being in solid form, like a brick. In fact, one of the ingredients was "Venetian, pulverized red brick." It is likely that this was the forerunner of the preparation he sold in bottles. The method of using the Brick to dye the hair is similar to the procedures for Jaynes American Hair Dye, except Jaynes came in powder form in a bottle. It's possible that later on, Grandjean also sold this Composition in powdered form. The preparation was applied by wetting it and applying it to the hair like a mud. It would be left on longer depending on the darkness desired.

An ad in 1841 indicated that Grandjean was also making a curling fluid and a Bandoline for glossing and arranging the hair.
