J.L. Giofray's Hair Renovator
Joseph L. Giofray was born in Italy around 1826. I found him listed as a Hairdresser in Rockland Maine starting in 1856. There is actually a flyer advertisement that is shown in several places on the internet, which advertises the product and claims to be from 1850. By the 1870 census, he called himself a Barber. It appears he was in business himself until around 1876. His business was on Main Street. The preparation was advertised at least as late as 1868. The 1868 ad was for Giofray's Hair Store, selling wigs, toupees, etc., and just mentioned the Hair Renovator. The only bottle known looks like a late 50s to late 60s vintage. Anybody seen a pontiled one?

From 1877 until 1887, Mrs Giofray kept the business going. Then, in 1889, Susan was listed simply as the "widow of Joseph."

The bottle shown was auctioned in 2012 by Heckler. It sold for $3,510. Photo courtesy of Heckler Auctions. The advertisement was provided by Sam Fuller.
