Wild's Patent Cosmetic Hair Dye
John L. Wild, of Bay City Michigan registered a patent for "IMPROVEMENT IN HAIR-DYES AND COSMETICS" in 1871 (Patent #117,583). His recipe was as follows:
One part of the nitrate of silver should be dissolved in three parts of spirits of ammonia; then melt together four parts of tallow, two parts of lard, and one part of spermaceti, and after such melting perfume to taste; then add to the melted fatty matter the solution composed of the nitrate of silver and ammonia, and stir the whole thoroughly until the mass commences to thicken, when it may be put into proper molds or otherwise formed into shape.
In 1882 I found the product advertised by Wheeler, Merrell & Co., of Detroit, Mich. in the National Druggist. It doesn't sound like this was ever a bottled product.
