Captol Compound
This was a German hair tonic developed by a Dr. P. J. Eichoff. It was imported and marketed in the U.S. by Mulhens & Kropff of New York City.

Both the the label and the ad for the product show a trademark #4711, but I guess I don't have that one. Coincidentally, there was another trademark registered in 1898 by Muhlens & Kropff, and it looked the same (see Muhlen's & Kropff Hair Tonic).

There was an article about this preparation in "Nostrums and Quackery" in 1912. They artticle was fairly uninteresting. They described what they thought was in the product and said it was not what it claimed to be. Apparently there was a German patent for the product claiming that they had combined the chemicals chloral and Tannin. Other Pictures:
