Barnes' Hair Restorative
Edward W. Barnes, of Syracuse, New York, registered a Patent for a "Hair Restorative" in 1872 (Patent #124,533). It was composed of 80% ground up "live-forever" plant, 18% lard, and 2% perfumery. The product was invented to cause hair to grow where it had fallen off or become thin. The only reference I found to Barnes in Syracuse was in 1870, and he listed his occupation that year as "Saloon."
